Day 7 - A Framework for Learning
The Framework
Topic - Clearly define the topic area you want to learn. This sets the boundaries and scope for your study efforts.
What - Describe the topic area in detail. Outline the concepts, theories, and facts that are essential to understanding the subject. This provides a clear focus for your learning.
Why - Explain why the topic exists and what it aims to achieve. Understanding the purpose behind the subject increases motivation and engagement, helping to maintain your focus over time.
How - Detail the mechanics of how the topic works from A to Z. Describe the processes and how they feed through various channels. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for mastering complex subjects.
Who - Identify who the topic applies to and who is affected by it. This can include specific groups of people, professionals, or industries. Knowing the stakeholders can help contextualise the information.
Exceptions - Acknowledge any exceptions to the prior categories. Identify unique cases or anomalies that don't fit the general rules. This helps in preparing for any surprises and ensures a well-rounded understanding.
Examples - Provide concrete examples of the topic in action. Real-world applications help solidify abstract concepts and demonstrate their practical relevance. Case studies are particularly useful in this context.
How?
Scan the Document: Quickly go through the material to get an overview. This initial scan helps in identifying the structure and main points.
Test Yourself Using Practice Questions: Use questions to assess your understanding and identify areas of weakness.
Fill Gaps in a Focused Way: Use higher-order learning techniques and teach others to reinforce your knowledge. Mind maps can be particularly effective in organising and visualising information.
Re-test: Reassess your knowledge to check progress and identify any remaining gaps.
Test in Exam Conditions: Simulate real exam settings to build confidence and improve time management skills.
Repeat: Continuously review and practice to maintain and deepen your knowledge. Regular repetition ensures long-term retention.
